The Bhoomi Puja is a customary ritual that is performed before commencing construction or land tilling activities for agricultural purposes. Nature and Mother Earth are considered very auspicious in Hinduism. The puja is done to offer regards and seek blessings of the Goddess before initiating any new task or project. The ideal months for performing Bhoomj Puja are: Margshira, Shravan, Paush and Kartik. The vaastu time dictates the suitable date for Bhoomi puja. Many times it falls twice in a month. The ideal weekdays for performing the puja are Mondays and Thursdays.
Significance of Bhoomi Pooja-
Those in the field of architecture or industries, do the Bhoomi Puja on the site of construction chosen for carrying out the work. Therefore, it is a gesture of seeking the blessings and approval and also showing a mark of respect to Mother earth who provides us with all that we need for our survival. Moreover, the earth is home to a variety of animals and germs. Therefore, by performing the Bhoomi Puja, one can seek forgiveness from those living beings that may become homeless due to construction activities. The Bhoomi Puja is also done to seek the blessings of Lord Ganesha and the other Gods to ensure that work takes place uninterrupted and smoothly after it begins.
Benefits of Bhoomi Puja
By offering prayers to the Bhoomi, one can eliminate the Vastu dosha and also the negative energies that may pose hindrance during construction. A small portion of the land is dug, and the rituals are performed before laying the foundation stone. Thus, by performing the Bhoomi Pujan, one seeks the blessings of the Almighty for carrying out the project without facing hurdles.
Bhoomi Puja Vidhi-
The spot for Bhoomi Pujan must be cleaned properly with Gangajal after bathing in the morning. While the Puja is commencing, the priest should face the north and the person conducting the puja should face the east. Like any other Puja, Bhoomi Puja too begins with offering prayers to Lord Ganesha, the Vignaharta. Then an oil or ghee lamp is lit. After that, an idol of the snake god and a Kalash are worshipped. This ritual is done to please Snake God and take his approval for beginning the construction works.
In most traditions, water, ghee, mango leaves, curd and honey are added to the Kalash as an offering to Snake God. Then a small portion of the land is dug for the foundation stone or brick to be laid. Finally, Sacred hymes and mantras are recited and flowers, akshat, turmeric, sandalwood paste, vermillion, incense sticks and fruits are offered to the Lord in order.
