Chaturthi Vrat is a fast observed by the devotees of Lord Ganesha and is mostly observed by men only. The devotees observe the vrat on the Chaturthi Tithi, that is, on the fourth day of the bright and dark half of the moon during Krishna Paksha (the waning phase of the lunar cycle). The vrat is kept from sunrise to moonrise and is kept to lead a peaceful life. Shukla paksha Chaturthi is observed as Vinayaka Chaturthi and Krishna paksha Chaturthi is observed as Sankashti Chaturthi.

• Offering prayers to Lord Ganesha gives happiness, prosperity, success and mental strength to fight various obstacles in life.
• It is believed that keeping the Chaturthi Vrat with utmost dedication will bring good fortune and an abundance of wealth to the Devotees.
• The elephant head of Lord Ganesha symbolises wisdom. So, if you pray to Lord Ganesha, you can gain wisdom.
• Lord Ganesha is commonly known as the Vighnaharta because worshipping him helps you overcome all obstacles and choose the right path in life.
• The large ears of Vighnaharta stand for patience. So, if you keep the Chaturthi Vrat, you’ll be able to get better focus, patience and inner strength.

Chaturthi Vrat Puja Vidhi

• Wake up early in the morning and take a bath before sunrise. Wear fresh clothes.
• You may perform the puja during Abhijeet or Vijaya, or Godhuli Muhurat. Begin the rituals by doing the dhyana (meditation). Invoke Lord Ganesha and pray to him with folded hands.
• Light an oil or ghee lamp and ensure keeping it to the right side of the idol of Lord Ganesha.
• Then start chanting the following Shloka and Mantras.

OM Ekadantaya Vidmahe, Vakratundaya Dheemahi Tanno Danti Prachodayat

• Puja Offerings: Offer water, Janeyu, akshat, flowers, Durva grass kumkum, Chandan, a fresh piece of cloth, Haldi, and incense sticks to the Lord. Then start offering the Bhog. The bhog consists of Modakas and Boondi Ladoo, Lord Ganesha’s favourites. You can also offer Shri phal, bananas, paan, supari and Dakshina (currency coins).

• Then, read the Sankashti Chaturthi Vrat Katha.
• Offer your prayers and gratitude to the Lord by performing the Aarti.
• Finally, you can break the fast after seeing the Moon and offering Arghya to Chandra Dev.
