Significance of Hariyali Amavasya

The Amavasya (new moon) that falls during the holy month of Sawan (monsoon) is known as Hariyali Amavasya. On this day, special darshan (sightings) are organized at various temples in North India, especially in Mathura and Vrindavan. Thousands of Krishna devotees come to Mathura, Dwarkadheesh, and Vrindavan, particularly at the Banke Bihari Temple, to seek the special darshan of Lord Krishna. According to Vedic astrology, it is advised not to perform any auspicious activities on the night of Hariyali Amavasya. During the night, the visible celestial body, the moon, is not seen in the sky.

It is also believed that on this day, negative spirits are stronger, so the practice of black magic is performed. People worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Kali to protect themselves from negative spirits. Some people also observe fasting on this day. The Rudrabhishek ceremony holds great significance in order to ward off negative energies and negativity.

  • It is believed that by distributing green bangles, sindoor, and bindi, the lifespan of married women is increased, and prosperity comes to the home.
  • In the pursuit of good fortune, men can also gift bangles, sweets, and other items to married women. However, this should be done before noon.
  • On the day of Hariyali Amavasya, devotees should perform the worship of the peepal (sacred fig) and tulsi (holy basil) trees.
  • The peepal tree is worshipped, circumambulated, and offerings of sweets are made as part of the tradition.
  • Religious scriptures depict the presence of the divine in mountains and trees. The peepal tree is considered the abode of the Trinity, and the amla tree is believed to be the abode of Lord Lakshminarayan.
  • Many people observe fasting on this day. Afterwards, in the evening, the fast is broken by consuming a meal.
  • It is believed that those who observe fast on the Amavasya of the Shravan month attain wealth and prosperity. It is also a special tradition to offer donations after bathing in holy rivers on Hariyali Amavasya.
