Significance of Jyeshtha Purnima
The significance of Jyeshtha Purnima lies in the fact that it is believed to be a day when women seek blessings for the long and healthy life of their husbands. Married women fast on this day and tie threads around a banyan tree, also known as the Vat tree (Banyan tree), and pray for the well-being and longevity of their husbands. This is why the festival is also known as Vat Savitri Purnima, as it is named after the legendary wife Savitri, who used her wit and devotion to save her husband Satyavan from death.
Jyestha Purnima is a highly revered festival among Hindus, especially for married women. It is believed that fasting on this day can bring blessings for the longevity and happiness of their husbands and their married life. Taking a dip in the holy Ganges is considered highly auspicious for married women, as it is believed to fulfil all their desires, both personal and professional, and grant them physical well-being and mental peace. Celebrating this festival is thought to bring great prosperity, happiness, and success not just for the women but also for their family members.
Apart from its significance for married women, Jyeshtha Purnima is also considered an auspicious day for performing various religious and spiritual practices. It is believed that performing good deeds and charity on this day brings great merit and blessings.

Mythological Legends Behind Jyeshtha Purnima
Jyestha Purnima is associated with a few different legends in Hindu mythology. One of the most well-known legends is that of Savitri and Satyavan.
According to the legend, Savitri was a devoted wife who was married to Satyavan, a prince who was destined to die within a year. Despite knowing this, Savitri married him and spent every moment in his company, hoping to change his fate. One day, while Satyavan was collecting wood in the forest, he suddenly collapsed and died in Savitri’s arms.
Savitri refused to accept his death and began following Yama, the god of death, as he carried Satyavan’s soul to the underworld. She pleaded with Yama to spare her husband’s life, but he refused. Savitri then used her wit and devotion to convince Yama to grant her three wishes. She asked for her father-in-law’s sight to be restored, for her father’s kingdom to be restored, and most importantly, for Satyavan’s life to be restored. Yama granted all three wishes and Satyavan was brought back to life.
This legend is often associated with Jyestha Purnima because it is believed that Savitri performed austerities and fasted on this day to seek blessings for her husband’s well-being. Married women today also observe this fast and perform rituals to seek blessings for the longevity and happiness of their husbands, much like Savitri did for Satyavan.
