Peddamma Thalli Temple is situated in the Jubilee Hills and is one of the most popular religious temples of Hyderabad. It enjoys an optimal space in the middle of the city. It is said to be more than 150 years old. The temple took its current shape when the Rajagopuram was built, in the year 1993. Peddamma Temple is devoted to Goddess Lakhmi who is shown as Santhan Laxmi sitting on a lion (Simha Vahanam) and Maa Durga. The name Peddamma comes from two words ‘ Pedda ‘ and ‘ amma, ‘ meaning mother of mothers or the supreme mother, denoting the goddess. There’s a place in the temple after the entrance where coins are placed vertically and the devotees go there to make a wish. The devotees believe that if they place a coin vertically there, then their wishes will be fulfilled.
Legend behind Peddamma Thalli Temple-
The origin of the Peddamma Thalli Temple is described by many stories/legends. According to one legend, the goddess had come to quench her thirst at this place after killing a demon. A shepherd later found an idol of the goddess at the same location where the temple stands now. Another legend says that a creature called Mahishasura, the son of water buffalo and the snake king Rambha had defied the god of heaven, Indra. He had the blessings of Lord Brahma that neither man nor god could kill him but he became more vengeful over time. Therefore, to put an end to his cruelties, Goddess Durga came into being at the request of other gods and blessings of the Holy Trinity-Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva. Together with the forces of Trinity and other gods, the Goddess killed Mahishasura will great power in a fierce fight.
Festivals of Peddamma Thalli Temple-
Peddamma Temple is also very famous for different festivals during which devotees from different parts of the country visit to seek blessings. Bonalu Festival, which is celebrated in the months of June and July is celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm in this temple. During this festival, women carry earthen pots covered with neem leaves along with turmeric and kumkum, containing items such as rice, jaggery, milk and curd. These earthen pots are carried as an offering to the Goddess. Rathotsavam that is organized on Ratha Saptami is another major festival of Peddamma Thalli Temple.
Temple Timings-
The Temple Timings for Peddamma Thalli Temple are: from 6 AM to 1 PM. Like most other temples, this temple too closes in the afternoon and opens again for darshan from 3 PM to 8 PM.
How to Reach Peddamma Thalli Temple?
Peddamma Thalli Temple is located on the Road no 55 of Jubilee Hills and is accessible through all modes of transport. The temple is about 13 kms away from the Secunderabad Railway station and about 14 kms away from the MGBS bus stop. You can find various regular buses running through the Temple and some direct buses from MGBS bus stop and Secunderabad too.
