Shattila Ekadashi Vrat Katha
According to legends, once Narad Muni reached Vaikunth, the abode of Lord Vishnu. There he asked Lord Vishnu to describe the significance of Shattila Ekadashi Vrat. On request of Narad ji, Lord Vishnu told that in ancient times, a Brahmin’s wife lived on Bhoolok (Planet Earth). She was a widow and her husband had died. She was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu and used to worship him with great devotion. Once she worshipped the god by fasting for a whole month. Her body became pure due to the effect of fasting, but she never donated any food to Brahmins and gods, so Lord Vishnu thought that this woman would remain unsatisfied when living in heaven, so he went to her one day to beg.
When Lord Vishnu begged her for alms, she picked up a lump of soil and placed it in Lord’s hands. Lord returned to Vaikuntha with that lump of soil. After some time she died and left her body and came into Lord Vishnu’s world – Vaikuntha. Here, she was given a cottage and a mango tree. Seeing the empty cottage, she got scared and visited Lord Vishnu and said, ‘I am a pious person and your ardent devotee, then why did I get an empty cottage? Lord Vishnu told her that this happened because she did not donate any food and gave him a lump of clay when he came for alms. In order to overcome this, he informed her that when Devkanya (goddess) come to visit her, she should not open the door until and unless they explain to her the rules of fasting on Shattila Ekadashi.
That woman followed the instructions and fasted on Shattila Ekadashi according to the methods given by Devkanya. Due to the effect of fasting, her hut was filled with food and wealth. Hence, Lord Vishnu told why O Narad, “accept this as truth that, the person who fasts on this Ekadashi and donates sesame and food, gets freedom and glory.
