What is Purnima 2023?

Purnima refers to the day of the month when the full moon appears and is a Sanskrit term that translates to ‘full moon’.

Purnima signifies the end of the waxing period or Shukla Paksha. This day is highly auspicious for commencing new endeavours, business ventures, etc. It also divides the month into two equal lunar fortnights known as Paksha – the bright fortnight before Purnima, called Shukla Paksha, and the dark fortnight after, called Krishna Paksha.

Purnima is celebrated across India with various important festivals, such as Guru Purnima, Kartik Purnima, and Buddha Purnima, and is considered an ideal day for fasting. Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu are worshipped on this day, and it is believed that the location of the moon exerts a unique magnetic pull that results in a natural upward movement in the body. This day is particularly auspicious for the worship of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi to seek their blessings for a prosperous life.
