Every fast has its own importance and benefits as per the Hindu scriptures. It is believed that keeping a fast brings the divine blessings of the Lord and showers the devotees with happiness and prosperity. Ekadashi Vrat holds a very important place among all the fasts. There are 24 Ekadashis every year.
In Hinduism, Ekadashi is a very auspicious day that holds great importance. Every month, there are two Ekadashis. Ekadashi (11th) day of Shukla Paksha (Waxing Moon Period) of Adikmaas or Purushottam Maas of the Hindu Calendar, is called Padmini Ekadashi.

According to the ‘Vasistha Siddhanta,’ the Adhik Maas or Mahina is an extra lunar month in the Hindu calendar that comes once every three years. Mostly, Padmini Ekadashi falls in the leap month of ‘Ashada’ of the Hindu calendar and is therefore also referred to be ‘Ashadha Adhika Maas Ekadashi’. It usually relates to the months of July-August in the Gregorian calendar.
This Ekadashi is extremely virtuous and therefore it is also called Purushottam Ekadashi. Padmini Ekadashi is also known as Kamala Ekadashi and it is observed all over India with full enthusiasm and fervour. It is believed that by observing this Purushottam or Padmini Ekadashi, ones get rid of past karma and sins. Moreover, All wishes and worldly desires of Devotees are fulfilled.

Padmini Ekadashi Vrat Katha
It is said that in Treta Yuga, there was a mighty king named Kitravirya. He had many queens, but none of them was able to give him a son to carry forward his legacy. But without a child, Despite all luxuries and opulence, the king and his queens were very sad and miserable. So, one day, with a wish to have a child, the king and his queens moved to the forest and started performing penance. Even after meditating for thousands of years, their prayers were not answered. Then, the queen asked Devi Anusuya for a solution, who told her to fast for Ekadashi in Shukla Paksha during Mal Masa (Adhik Maas).
Devi Anusuya also told her about the procedure of fasting, which the queen followed and thus fasted on the Padmini Ekadashi. After completion, Lord Vishnu appeared and asked her to make a wish. She prayed to God to bless her husband with his wishes if he was happy with her prayers. So, God asked the king to wish. He wished for a son who should be multi-talented, respected in all three worlds and who could not be defeated by anyone but God. Lord Vishnu granted him the wish and later, the queen gave birth to a son who was known by the name of Kartavirya Arjuna. In the long run, this child became a very powerful king who even captivated King Ravana under his reign.
It is said that Lord Krishna had first made Pandav Putra Arjuna aware of the greatness and importance of Purushottam Ekadashi by telling the vrat katha of this fast.
