In Hinduism, Ekadashi is a very auspicious day that holds great importance. Every month, there are two Ekadashis. Ekadashi (11th) day of Shukla Paksha (Waxing Moon Period) of Adikmaas or Purushottam Maas of the Hindu Calendar, is called Padmini Ekadashi.

Padmini  Ekadashi Vrat Katha

It is said that in Treta Yuga, there was a mighty king named Kitravirya. He had many queens, but none of them was able to give him a son to carry forward his legacy. But without a child, Despite all luxuries and opulence, the king and his queens were very sad and miserable. So, one day, with a wish to have a child, the king and his queens moved to the forest and started performing penance. Even after meditating for thousands of years, their prayers were not answered. Then, the queen asked Devi Anusuya for a solution, who told her to fast for Ekadashi in Shukla Paksha during Mal Masa (Adhik Maas).

Devi Anusuya also told her about the procedure of fasting, which the queen followed and thus fasted on the Padmini Ekadashi. After completion, Lord Vishnu appeared and asked her to make a wish. She prayed to God to bless her husband with his wishes if he was happy with her prayers. So, God asked the king to wish. He wished for a son who should be multi-talented, respected in all three worlds and who could not be defeated by anyone but God. Lord Vishnu granted him the wish and later, the queen gave birth to a son who was known by the name of Kartavirya Arjuna. In the long run, this child became a very powerful king who even captivated King Ravana under his reign.

It is said that Lord Krishna had first made Pandav Putra Arjuna aware of the greatness and importance of Purushottam Ekadashi by telling the vrat katha of this fast.
