Panchakshara Stotram is a very powerful mantra dedicated to Lord Shiva. It praises the divine presence and power of Lord Shiva and used to receive his blessings. Stotra in Sanskrit literature means poetry  written in praise of a deity. Thus Stotra is created by a great devotee of Lord Shiva, Shri Adi Shankaracharya. He was also a religious philanthropist and monotheist. Panchakshara in literal sense means “five letters” in Sanskrit and refers to the five sacred letters: Na, Ma, Śi, Vā and Ya. It is considered to be a prayer devoted to Lord Shiva and is related to the Shiva Mantra- “Om Namah Shivaya” from which the phrase “Namah Shivaya” is also known as Panchakshari Mantra.

Thus, the Shiva Panchakshara Stotra is based on the Panchakshari mantra “Namah Shivaya”, in which each letter has a deep meaning associated with it.

Na – the earth element

Ma – Water element

Shi – the element of fire

Va – the air element
